Heritage Landscapes vol.36

Heritage Landscapes is the Promemoria Group newsletter created to observe the contemporary heritage landscape. Twice a month we share the most interesting news and the most innovative projects, investigating those archival stories that turn an object, a brand or an insight, into a legend.

Between architecture, design, fashion, food, technology. With no limit to our curiosity.

1. Main Theme

Vintage cocktail books
In the past, the line between a pharmacist’s counter and a bartender’s was very blurred, almost overlapping. This is demonstrated by the 1753 New English Dispensatory, a pharmacology manual that includes recipes such as the Stomach Julep, (a saffron syrup mixed with mint and sherry), today worthy of an excellent aperitif.
In an era marked by fear of infectious diseases and lack of drinking water and hygiene standards, alcohol was often seen as a cure.
Promemoria
Precisely thanks to these texts found, the EUVS Digital Collection is born, a virtual library-archive that collects and catalogs manuals, recipes, menus and rare texts that have made the history of bartending. The current collection, which ranges from 1753 to 1959, already includes several dozen texts, always growing, and with an eye towards the Cuban tradition.

The collection represents a valuable resource for bartenders, researchers, enthusiasts, historians, who want to find inspiration for new recipes and deepen the roots of this profession and its role within the society of the past, exploring the evolution of mixology at the crossroads between art and science.
There is no shortage of legendary figures such as William "The Only" Schmidt, author in 1892 of the manual The Flowing Bowl, who serve as a testimony to the cultural and social value of this profession: in his book you can find stories of drinks, poems, recipes and anecdotes, demonstrating that a cocktail can be both a technical gesture and an artistic act.

2. Avvistamenti. Traces of projects to keep an eye on

a. Back to the future, 40 years later
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of "Back to the Future", Villa Beretta Magnaghi in Marcallo con Casone (Milan) hosts Back in Time: The Exhibition.
An immersive exhibition that offers a journey into the world of the protagonists of the trilogy, with original props and iconic costumes. Along the exhibition route, a special area is dedicated to the backstage of the films with exclusive documentaries and rare photos, while on weekends, for the most nostalgic, the park of the villa hosts free screenings of the trilogy.
A futuristic way to dive into the past!
b. NoiDonne Historical Archive
When an archive of profound historical and social importance is digitized and made accessible to the public, it is always good news for heritage enthusiasts.
In this case it is the Archivio Storico di Noi donne, a women’s magazine born in the mid-40s, which offers more than 2,200 articles, including those of the clandestine editions distributed by the partisan relay. On the occasion of its 80th anniversary, which is being celebrated this year, a special issue has been distributed offering an original Dictionary with over 130 entries written by readers. A magazine by and for women!
c. The legacy of the Batllò Chair
More than a century after its birth, the unmistakable Batllò Chair by Antoni Gaudi has also been reissued in limited edition by BD Barcelona Design in collaboration with Casa Valle.
A chair that has made design history, where the structure adapts to the shapes of the human body, minimizing straight lines to be more ergonomic and comfortable. The new edition preserves the original characteristics of material and craftsmanship, and can be found on display at the Casa Valle gallery in New York during the NYCxDesign Week.

3. Memory Lane. Things that happen, and we want to remember

130 years of Lavazza
In 2025, Lavazza celebrates 130 years of history, an anniversary that is witness to a journey made up of passion, business culture and innovation.
On the occasion of the International Book Fair in Turin, he talked about the link between culture, sustainability and the world of food, within the Literary Café, with a rich program including the panel "Inside Nuvola Lavazza. An architectural project where company, community and culture are intertwined": a unique opportunity to deepen the role of the Lavazza Cloud as the cradle of relationships, ideas and innovation.
On the occasion of the Salone, a new editorial route dedicated to this special anniversary was released, a story made of images and words that retraces the history of the company thanks to archive photographs, historical documents, posters and notes.
A project that we have carefully carried out, in collaboration with the Lavazza Historical Archive, to enhance a corporate heritage that continues to inspire the future. Always one bean at a time, one coffee after another.
