Heritage Landscapes vol.34

Heritage Landscapes is the Promemoria Group newsletter created to observe the contemporary heritage landscape. Twice a month we share the most interesting news and the most innovative projects, investigating those archival stories that turn an object, a brand or an insight, into a legend.

Between architecture, design, fashion, food, technology. With no limit to our curiosity.

1. Main Theme

Dorothea Lange
A photographic archive of more than 600 high-resolution shots of the visionary photographer Dorothea Lange. A project of the Oakland Museum of California, which wanted to include not only photographs, but also negatives, contact sheets and related resources, constructing different narratives through the photographer's shots.
Promemoria
Famous for her powerful depictions of the Great Depression, Dorothea Lange's work is characterised by a powerful and stark realism, and her images, including the famous “Migrant Mother”, raised international awareness of the plight of migrant workers in the 1930s.

The archive is divided into four main sections: ‘The Depression’, ‘World War II at Home’, ‘Post-war Projects’ and ‘Early work/Personal work’, and focuses on the social and economic challenges experienced by the United States in the 20th century. A freely explorable heritage made digital thanks to the support of the Henry Luce Foundation.
"In the past, events have always played a major role in the work I've done. First there was the depression, then the dustbowl, then the war. Now I'm trying to get at something else... things you have to look very hard to see, because they have been taken for granted not only by our eyes but, often, by our hearts as well."
-Dorothea Lange

2. Avvistamenti. Traces of projects to keep an eye on

Promemoria
a. Bruno Alfieri. Publishing and Magazines for Contemporary Art and Architecture
There is one figure in particular who has shaped 20th century art and architecture publishing: Bruno Alfieri. An art critic, he followed in his father's footsteps as a publisher, publishing monographs, collection catalogues and cultural magazines. Lotus, Quadrum, Zodiac, Metro and Marmo are just some of the magazines he founded, featured, starting on 5 May, of the exhibition Bruno Alfieri. Publishing and magazines for contemporary arts and architecture at the Mare Karina Gallery, Venice. Curated by Chiara Carrera and Mario Lupano, the exhibition focuses on Alfieri's most prolific years, when his cultural and entrepreneurial operations were at their most fervent, in a path that, by exploring the past, aims to trace future trajectories.
b. The Loro Piana centenary
Loro Piana, the famous maison from Piedmont, today a spokesman for quiet luxury at world level, celebrates 100 years of history with Master of Fibres, a book that recounts its passion for the finest fibres, published by Assouline. For the occasion, in addition to the brand's pop-ups available on three continents, the retrospective If You Know, You Know. Loro Piana's Quest for Excellence at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai, a constant dialogue between landscapes and works of art, between heritage and innovation, curated by Judith Clark and still open until 5 May.
c. 250 years reading Jane Austen
For all incurable romantics, 2025 marks 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen, one of the best-loved authors in English literature.
The UK, in particular, is celebrating the anniversary with several exhibitions, including Austenmania!, in the writer's birthplace, which explores film adaptations of her works and offers visitors an immersion into her creative process through original manuscripts and letters. In Bath, a city deeply connected to the writer's life and novels, there are costume balls, concerts and literary tours, recreating the atmosphere of the period and celebrating in full Regency style.

3. Memory Lane. Things that happen, and we want to remember

Archivio Magazine goes to Turin
On 21 March, Circolo del Design in Turin hosted a panel of ARCHIVIO N°10 - The Design Issue, the magazine of Promemoria Group, during which Andrea Montorio, CEO of Promemoria Group and Editor of ARCHIVIO; Daniela Hamaui, Journalist and Editorial Director of ARCHIVIO; and Chiara Zanesi, Editorial Consultant of ARCHIVIO N°10 and Heritage Director of Fornasetti, brought to light fragments of unpublished memories and original stories hiding in the archives of institutions, brands, designers and creatives.
To celebrate the publication of the latest issue, there was also a small exhibition dedicated to the three editorial cycles of Archivio, an opportunity to immerse ourselves in its transformations and diversity.
