Heritage Landscapes vol.55

Heritage Landscapes is the Promemoria Group newsletter created to observe the contemporary heritage landscape. Twice a month we share the most interesting news and the most innovative projects, investigating those archival stories that turn an object, a brand or an insight, into a legend.

Between architecture, design, fashion, food, technology. With no limit to our curiosity.

1. The Long View

The Avant Garde Archive
The revolutionary, albeit brief, run of Avant Garde represents one of the earliest examples of cross-pollination between publishing, art, and graphic design in the 20th century. Founded in 1968 through a collaboration between the radical publisher Ralph Ginzburg and the designer Herb Lubalin, the magazine successfully captured the cultural and political tensions of late 1960s America.

The use of a completely new visual language transformed the magazine into an avant-garde laboratory capable of combining political satire, eroticism, photography, literature, and graphic experimentation. Despite its closure in 1971 due to legal troubles involving Ginzburg, Avant Garde left a profound legacy in international independent publishing.

Designer Mindy Seu, in collaboration with the Herb Lubalin Study Center, has carried out a meticulous and thorough digitization project, working to restore and make all issues of the magazine available online, thereby giving anyone interested the opportunity to explore the aesthetics and countercultures of an era that remains both fascinating and divisive to this day.

2. Augmented Craft

Flipbook, a New Way to Conduct Research

Flipbook is a visual browser generated entirely in real time using artificial intelligence models: each page is a navigable image in which text, interface, and content are created on demand without HTML or traditional layouts. Developed by Zain Shah, Eddie Jiao, and Drew Carr, the project combines agent-based web search, image generation, and experimental video models to envision a more immersive and fluid digital experience. The goal is to move beyond the logic of static interfaces and transform online browsing into a continuous, dynamic, real-time visual space.

3. Seen & Noted

Data Divas in Venice
The Mare Karina space in Venice is hosting the exhibition Data Divas through July 18, the first solo exhibition in Italy by French artist Hanna Rochereau. Through sculptures, paintings, and installations, the project transforms the space into an immersive archive that reflects on the mechanisms of preservation, classification, and the construction of cultural value. Blending the atmospheres of a showroom and a corporate warehouse, the exhibition explores the relationship between memory, data, and systems of visibility in the worlds of art and fashion.

“The past and the future intersect in a design object, and immersing ourselves in this extraordinary universe helps us understand where we come from and where we can go.”

ARCHIVIO, Archivissima, and Legend are the ways Promemoria Group valorizes heritage, showcasing the extraordinary content of archives through a contemporary lens—whether through a magazine that changes its editorial team every four issues, a national festival with a format unique in Europe, or a B2B event that explores how a brand can transcend time and become a legend.
