Heritage Landscapes vol.54

Heritage Landscapes is the Promemoria Group newsletter created to observe the contemporary heritage landscape. Twice a month we share the most interesting news and the most innovative projects, investigating those archival stories that turn an object, a brand or an insight, into a legend.

Between architecture, design, fashion, food, technology. With no limit to our curiosity.

1. The Long View

Film on Paper
When discussing digital archives entirely dedicated to the art of cinema, one cannot fail to mention Film on Paper: a project that originated from the personal collection of Eddie Shannon, an interaction designer based in York, who decided to digitize his original movie posters to preserve them from wear and tear and make them accessible to other enthusiasts.

The collection began in 1994 and has expanded over time, gathering authentic posters used in theaters to promote film releases: ephemeral materials, intended for brief display and never meant for sale. Precisely because of their transient nature, they become rare items and, in some cases, true collector’s pieces.

But Film on Paper is not just a showcase; it is a reference tool: the site explores formats, printing details, creators, and the differences between originals, reprints, and forgeries, offering a useful guide for those new to collecting, restoring value to the material dimension of visual communication, and chronicling the evolution of poster design, from hand-painted illustrations to the widespread use of photography.

Belongings: Affection as a Design Strategy

Designmuseum Denmark is hosting the exhibition Belongings: Affection as a Design Strategy through May 31. The exhibition aims to explore the emotional bond between people and objects, presenting affection as a catalyst for more sustainable consumption. Starting from the idea that the things we are attached to are preserved longer, design is reinterpreted as a relationship, giving rise to a sensory installation in which visitors are invited to interact with their own object—brought to life through artificial intelligence—creating a living archive made up of connections.

3. Seen & Noted

Gossamurmur by Anne Waldman

As part of the 61st Venice Art Biennale in 2026, In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh, also features the poetic voice of Anne Waldman with excerpts from Gossamurmur (2013), a work that reflects on the concept of the archive as a living, resilient organism. The poem addresses themes such as surveillance, identity, and memory, evoking the fragility of poetry’s “sacred archive.” Waldman participated on May 7 in the Biennale’s opening program, with a “procession of poets” dedicated to the Poetry Caravan conceived by Kouoh.

“When we conceived La Notte degli Archivi in 2016, our goal was simple yet ambitious: to restore archives’ public voice, to bring them to life and make them accessible, capable of speaking to the present. Ten years later, it’s exciting to see how this vision has grown far beyond our expectations, giving rise to a festival that now involves hundreds of organizations throughout Italy and, since last year, across Europe as well.”
